In the next week or couple of weeks, I’ll be posting a poll to get an informal idea of how people feel about various alternatives to “non-ace-spectrum” as a descriptor for people who are not on the asexual spectrum— are not asexual, grey-asexual, or demisexual. This poll will be open to everybody.
For that to happen, I want to compile as exhaustive of a list of possible of all the viable alternatives that have been suggested, such as poikkisexual, allosexual, and zedsexual. I remember very few of them, and Tumblr makes it hard to go back through archives searching, so if you would, please reblog with any ideas you’ve heard proposed. I’ll attempt to keep a somewhat current running list of all the suggestions I already have, to avoid duplication.
Thanks!
ETA: If you have a term to add and you remember the post where it was first proposed, please link if you can! That would be a big help.
Running list:
allosexual
poikkisexual
zedsexual
I was actually thinking of doing this, and then I realized I was too busy/lazy. Well, the other thing is, I’m going to keep using what I want to use, and I think it’s going to be more what catches on that any deciding opinion poll. But I don’t think there’s any harm, so, from my blogging archives (my thoughts in parenthesis):
alisexual, meaning “other” or “else” (not a fan of the “a” ones; Sciatrix said it sounded too much like “ally”)
allosexual (same as ali?)
appetant (sounds like more to do with libido? idk, I don’t know the origins of the word; still not a fan of the “a” ones, and also that it doesn’t follow the -sexual pattern)
verisexual, meaning “true” (ha ha ha no.)
mesosexual, meaning “middle,” as part of a scale including hypo- (for grey-A?), hyper-, and a-. (Too focused on behavior/libido)
mono/polysexual, borrowed from the bi/pan community and combined. (Unwieldy)
adsexual, meaning “towards” (OH THE TYPOS)
obsexual, meaning “towards” (OP points out it shares a sound with “obsessed”)
albosexual, meaning “white” (see link for 6 reasons I don’t like it)
*sexual, where * is a wild card symbol (logically could include a/demi/grey-a-sexuals)
sekasexual, meaning “mixed” or “cross” (sekaseksual? say it aloud)
poikkisexual, meaning “cross” or “transverse;” mixing things that would not usually be mixed (My favorite, although I would say that, I came up with it. The idea of a “cross section” makes sense to me, and I actually found out that is apparently the concept behind the German word for “everything” (I think; might have been “anything”) :D)
AND THE VERY BEST ONE:
:Db
Yeah, I don’t like most of them. I do like Poikikisexual though it’s rather long, especially now that I know what it means. Though if you’re talking about cross section as in a cross section of sexuality surely we’d be a part of that too?
Also, zedsexual with ‘zed’ not meaning anything other than ‘z’ (using the non-American pronunciation to avoid using gendered pronouns like ze and zie) basically playing off of the asexual thing and being further along the alphabet from a and demi and grey and having no actual meaning that an insult anyone that anybody can think of and mostly there for symmetry compared to the ‘a’.
Poikikisexual sounds nicer (sounds kind of Hawaiian actually) but I like the zedsexual better.
A lot of the ones with ‘other’ mean ‘other’ as in sexually attracted to others but not specifying who that other is unlike homo/heter/bi/pan do.
As far as the cross-section idea is concerned - when you look at “sexual” in this context and what it means, it means (sexual) attraction. So, homosexual would be “same attracted,” hetero “different attracted,” etc., and aces would be “no(t) attracted.” So, a cross sections of all “attracted”s would not include us because we have no attraction to include? Or that’s how I think of it anyway.
And I will take this opportunity to give my opinion on ze/zedsexual, since I haven’t yet: I don’t like it, because it doesn’t mean anything. I mean, I am aware that the anti-ace brigade is not going to like us no matter what we do, but if I’m actually talking to one of my poikkisexual friends, and I say, “well, asexual experience differs from zedsexual experience in that—”, the only situation I can imagine is them stopping me and saying, “what now sexual?” And I’m going to say, “zedsexual, the opposite of asexual.” Then I’m going to get a look (which is what will happen with all of these alternatives, to be fair) and a “what does that zed bit mean then?” I do not want to have to say, “Oh, um. You know, Z, opposite of A?” (especially because they are not going to know what zed is! Sorry to be American.) No, really, imagine yourself having a serious conversation with a person who is not on tumblr, and having to explain these words.
It’s why I don’t like albo-, and have reservations about the ones that mean “other”; this needs to make sense to people who don’t care, because 98% of the people in the world don’t care. It I have to explain some complicated in joke, or some metaphor, it’s not going to go over well.
