Well, I haven’t been around very much because of finals and stuff, but I have been vaguely aware of this thing that was said in an interview about BBC Sherlock the other day, and the surrounding reaction. I apologize if someone has already said this, but the…
I don’t have all the background here, but the way I’m reading this tweet is “Asexuality is not a boring life, it’s just a boring choice for this story dramatically. Just like happiness is not boring for people who live happy lives, but sadness is less boring for this story dramatically.” From the little context I have, I don’t think he’s trying to make any sort of point about asexuality as a sexual orientation or as a “lifestyle,” I think he may have just clumsily used the incredibly loaded word “lifestyle” to mean “a style of living,” and his caps come off as SHOOTING YOU DOWN but maybe they’re just for contrast, since you can’t really type italics on Twitter?
Or perhaps I’m being overly optimistic and giving people too much benefit of the doubt. Just my interpretation.
I agree with you completely, but I think that’s kind of the point of why this comment is offensive: there is actually no less tension when writing a romance with an ace somewhere in it. The reason why he thinks there is, from what I’ve gathered, is that to him all aces are also aplatonic and aromantic. Despite the fact that Scandal was entirely devoted to how the John&Sherlock platonic relationship was the most important thing in the whole series…..? Which is also not to say that aplatonic or aromantic lives are uninteresting, but I will concede that it can be difficult to write a romance about them. What Moffat is implying about “the asexual lifestyle” is simply Not True, which he would see if he could get past this idea that all aces are purposefully Forever Alone.
