shaunsense replied to your post: I was wondering, since you’ve had experience with Japanese asexual communities, if you noticed any overlap between men who identified as asexual and men who considered themselves 草食系.
Is sekumai a sexuality minority? I was kinda predicting the same thing. I like the idea of a term like 草食系男子 where one could identify as something that includes, in a way, sexuality and gender identity without having to use the word “sexual.”
Yup, セクシュアルマイノリティー, I believe.
I’m not sure I share your optimism about 草食系男子 and 肉食系女子, though, and here’s why: It implies that men who are “passive” or women who are “active” are fundamentally different, as opposed to just people who have differing tastes, and it also doesn’t leave much of a middle. The direction of Japanese society now seems to be a more middling approach, which I think is healthy, and this seems to be pushing back against that progress. I don’t know, it could also be that the media hype is distorting my perception of the issue, but the only way forward regarding Japan’s social problems that I see is to start making compromises regarding rigid gender roles, and just flipping them and calling it a day seems to be counter-productive.
aceadmiral, and ohter people that read my blog:it may need correct? ——...have introduced...
Thank you for weighing in! That was pretty much my understanding of the term as well :D
